We have a soft spot for Charlecote as photography venue. The fact that it’s so close to the M40 and and Birmingham, while being in the countryside and convenient for Stratford-upon-Avon doesn’t hurt!

These pictures are from Rachel’s DSLR course a few weeks ago – once again showing that you don’t need to take boring pictures even if you know that they have been taken lots of times before.

This river regularly floods and completely submerges the Capability Brown waterfall. There are a couple of waterfalls which make for great long and short exposure pictures.

They even have lambs!

We try to run all our different courses at Charlecote, as well as running some courses for the National Trust. It also benefits from a really nice cafe and extremely friendly staff. Have a look at the upcoming courses here.

We don’t run the people photography course as often as we would like. It’s not as popular as our other courses, and the budget doesn’t allow for models etc so we have to use each other.

One alternative is to bring your own kids. So at Charlecote Rachel taught the course to some parents who thoughtfully brought their own children as models. And, thanks to modern paranoia we can’t show you the pictures!

Here are a few pictures from the course anyway, showing Rachel pretending to be working. People photography is about getting the best out of the subject while thinking about eye lines, backgrounds and depth of field. Shooting people is like driving in traffic, you need to be able to change gear without thinking about it.

I know that we’ve been waiting for the weather to get better, but Sunday 27th May was an absolute scorcher! It didn’t stop our lovely group from being eager to get outside and practice their new-found knowledge of learning how to blur the background for a professional-looking shallow depth of field image. Although, the crowds of visitors meant that they had to really think about composition much more thoughtfully. We always say that you either have people in the image on purpose (maybe to show scale), or not at all. If you simply didn’t notice them, then it’s a mistake, and will serve as a distraction. And don’t forget, once you have lost your viewer to a distraction, you can’t get them back!

We also practised using shutter priority (S or TV). All of the group were thrilled to know how to get that gorgeous effect of ‘milky water’. It’s all in the shutter speed!picture from photography course at Charlecote

What a fantastic day we had today…loads of fun and some amazing photo’s into the bargain!! Lynne is back again, and so is Jean! Steve made up the trio!
All three took some very unusual and considered shots, and found the exercise of going out into the landscape for half an hour without their camera’s to ‘feel’ the landscape an unusual but surprisingly interesting and incredibly useful exercise.
