You never can tell with bees

We were at Charlecote House in Warwickshire the other day (photography commission for the National Trust) and Phil took these pictures to illustrate depth of field.  At the end of the days the bees were returning to the hive, and we wanted to illustrate this clearly.

In the first picture the entrance to the hive was in focus, in the second Phil focused on the ground about a foot out, then recomposed onto the hive.  Any bees a foot away would then be in focus, and there were plenty to choose from!

Two bees were harmed in the making of these pictures,  because they stung Phil, but you have to suffer for your art!
