Rachel’s Portrait Photography Course in Malvern

Rachel had an absolutely fantastic day last Saturday in Malvern teaching the portrait photography course. A large group of 10, but it meant that there was plenty of opportunity to photograph each other! There were some absolutely stunning photo’s and everyone agreed that they had got photo’s of themselves that they wouldn’t mind putting  in a frame! The secret to taking great photo’s of people is to really connect with them, and ask yourself the question: “who is this person? What’s special about them? We experimented with natural light, and also had a few challenges as the light was incredibly bright, so squinty eyes and shadows were a problem too! There were also a few surprised faces at Rachel’s suggestions for camera settings…here’s a hint: Manual mode might not be in your best interests when shooting people!!! (LIfe’s too short!).
We had a great laugh, and everyone went away buzzing and eager to practice their new skills.

The Group

Most of our photography career has been in natural light, so this is how we like to work where ever possible. Modern cameras can handle much higher ISOs with good results, so natural light is increasingly possible, and as ISO gets higher, flash can be weaker and even the on-camera flash can sometimes do the job. Through The Lens (TTL) metering is now found on even the most low-spec cameras, and will turn the flash power down as needed, so increasing the ISO can reduce the power and give a more natural look with very little effort from the photographer.
